Taco Boy is a Mexican restaurant I visited on both of my trips to South Carolina. It is located in the coastal city of Folly Beach, SC (outside of Charleston). Â
Â
The food (as I’ve mentioned) is Mexican in theme and very fresh and tasty. Both times I went I had Cadillac margaritas which weren’t pricey at all (around $7-$8) for the amount of alcohol in them. A lot of times when you order a margarita somewhere you feel like you’re drinking a glass of sour mix with just a little touch of tequila. That’s definitely not the case here and I can be pretty picky about my margaritas (having worked in a Mexican place myself for over 6 years that didn’t even use sour mix).
Â
We started with the salsa trio on the appetizer menu.  The chips were fried and salted perfectly, and there were three salsas (hence the word, trio) to try. One was a salsa fresco, one was a corn salsa, and one was a pureed smoky chipotle tasting salsa. They were all excellent and I had to force myself to stop eating so I wouldn’t ruin my meal.

The tacos there are ordered a la carte and there’s a lot of different tastes to choose from. We decided to share so we can taste a few different things. We got a breaded fish taco, a grilled fish taco and a black bean taco the first time accompanied by a Portobello mushroom quesadilla. The second time we got the two fish tacos along with a taco salad. Â
 Â
I am not exaggerating in saying that the Portobello quesadilla is the best quesadilla I have ever tasted. The flavor exploded and was unexpected. I believe our favorite out of the tacos was the grilled fish, it was accompanied some sort of sauce (lime cilantro I believe) and was just fantastic. Â
 Â
The amount of food we ordered was just enough for two people, and we got a little taste of everything we wanted to. I would suggest doing the same and sharing a few dishes so you can really try it all. The tab came to around $45-$50 with the two of us each having two alcohol drinks, so it really wasn’t too crazy, and we definitely had more than enough food.
 Â
I definitely recommend Taco Boy if you’re in the Charleston area.Â
